Analysis

This Ronald Reagan address in November of 1986 dealt with growing rumors that the US was sending arms to Iran in exchange for the safe return of hostages being held in Lebanon.  He typically came right to the American people to combat these rumors yet the Believabiilty Meter has something to say about what he was stating.  Right off the bat he talks about a secret program that was in place for 18 months but perhaps it was longer than that.  It is interesting to watch the comments about his reasons for dealing with Iran, as he may have believed that eliminating state sponsored terrorism in that region would be futile (:31).  When he talks about getting to the facts, he carefully crafts his answer and talks about how there was "not swapped boat loads and plane loads of weapons for the return of American hostages"(1:44).  Less than 8 months later he would deliver a speech (Reascoop Reagan Apologizes for Iran Contra) that was very different.
