In today's world of politics, the word "never" is often used, but can any politician really make that strong a claim without having some internal conflict? Maybe, but that politician is not Roland Burris. Amazingly, the former Illinois attorney general states here that he has "never" thought about race over the course of four successful election bids (and a few unsuccessful ones) during more than three decades in public office.
The Believability Meter thinks Burris may be remembering episodes such as the 1998 New York Times article where he was quoted referring to his gubernatorial opponents as "non-qualified white boys." Now Burris has been appointed by a tainted governor to fill the only African American-held seat in the Senate, and, despite what he says, the Believability Meter shows Burris is acutely aware of the role skin color will play in the perception of how he is treated.
There's no question Burris is right: race should play no role in politics, but do you think he's really as colorblind as he claims?
