Patrick Dempsey gives Ellen DeGeneres a video interview on her talk show regarding fellow Grey's Anatomy cast member, Brooke Smith's, recent termination from the popular ABC Thursday night doctor drama. There is some speculation that Smith's firing is the result of scandal, as her lesbian character recently seemed destined for further scripting, and increased plot time. According to the Believability Meter, there is also reason to doubt Dempsey's sincerity when he claims "I don't know what happened with that story line." Very likely, some internal strife played a role, but Dempsey's own job security requires that he remain mum. Grey's Anatomy has been plagued by screen conflict in the past (see: Katherine Heigl), but is ABC reaching for the defibrillator paddles here, manufacturing a crisis to jumpstart the show's slipping ratings?
