Analysis

In this video, an unkempt Joaquin Phoenix surprises fans by announcing the final performance of his career. Often muttering and slurring his words, and looking nothing like the clean, confident actor who in recent years has played leading roles in major blockbusters from Walk the Line to Gladiator, Phoenix's behavior and demeanor can only be called bizarre, even more so considering the fact that the Believability Meter isn't buying his retirement story at all.

What is going on here? There's a tragic history of drug abuse in the Phoenix family; older brother River died of a heroin overdose in 1993. Could Joaquin's sudden decision be due to his own battle with the darker side of fame, or is the Believability Meter calling him out for another reason? Tell us what you think.

Growing up is a hard thing to do... for some. What music? A stint as Johnny Cash in a movie does not make him a good musician--just a good actor.

After his performance on Letterman last night, he has lost all credibility. For that matter, Letterman appeared to be in on the joke. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1xK6xz8d9Q

Does anyone remember Andy Kauffman? Could Joaquin be preparing for a roll and like Andy, is he "living" the character? Just a thought.
